So did Prince die from the flu, or was it an overdose?
The initial news about Prince’s untimely death was that the legendary musician had died from flu complications, but maybe that’s not the case.
Let’s look back at Prince’s last week on earth.
Last Thursday (April 14), he performed in Atlanta and seemed fine. The next day, his plane made an emergency landing in Illinois. He was taken to the hospital, reportedly treated for the flu, and released after three hours.
Saturday, he went to a party in Minnesota and told fans, “Wait a few days before you waste any prayers.”
The next day, someone spotted Prince riding on a bicycle outside his home. Pretty normal for Prince.
Yesterday (Wednesday, April 20), he went to Walgreens for the fourth time in the last week. Reportedly he looked “frail and nervous.” No one has said what he got from the pharmacy.
Today, Thursday, he was found unresponsive in an elevator inside his compound at 9.43am. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
So why the rumors about an overdose?
Well apparently, that emergency landing wasn’t for just flu-like symptoms. According to TMZ, Prince was treated for a drug overdose — given a “save shot.” You know the kind of shot that a person is given to counteract the effects of an opiate (like heroin). (We’ve all seen Pulp Fiction, right?)
TMZ says that the doctor advised Prince to stay 24 hours at the hospital, but since he couldn’t get a private room, he decided to bail.
I’m a big Prince fan, and I don’t know what to think. Prince was known for NOT drinking and doing drugs. He was a Jehovah’s Witness.
I’ll wait for the autopsy/toxicology. At this point, it obviously doesn’t matter why he died – he’s dead. But it will be interesting to find out if TMZ is right.
